Conference Site:
Our hosts this year are a first, as we will be at the incredible Florida Gulf Coast University.  It is an environmental school built next to a wildlife refuge with resident alligators, many species of turtle, fish and birds and a walking path that is home to many of Florida’s amazing resident creatures.  It is a green school committed to civic responsibility and community service and they have truly embraced humane education on many levels.

APHE will provide coach bus transportation between the university and the Hilton Garden Inn for the conference sessions.  Parking is available at the University, but requires permits and the parking lot is quite a distance from the Student Union where we will be holding our sessions.

Click here for a campus map (PDF). To assist you with your plans, you will see on the map that the Student Union is #17 on your right. That is where we will be meeting for the conference. We have arranged a bus to transport you to that building from the hotel and times will be announced. Our space is located on the second floor and is called the “Ballroom.”  If you are driving in, you will need to stop at #13, the information booth, to let them know you are with the conference. You will go left at the stop at the end of that road. You will be parking in the building marked PG1, just past the Student Union also on the right, and then walking back to the Student Union for the conference. To plan ahead it is about a 4 minute walk. The Student Union is set back behind a parking lot, but we will have signs out each day to help you locate everything.

Lodging:
A room block has been reserved for conference attendees at the Hilton Garden Inn Fort Myers Airport/FGCU, just two miles from the airport with free shuttle service.  A double room, including a full buffet breakfast for two is $119 a night and the rooms include: refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and free wireless Internet.  They have a pool and many other amenities.

Scholarship Information:
APHE members in good standing may apply for financial assistance through the Nathania Gartman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Scholarship awards are intended to offset part of the cost of attending (travel, registration, lodging).  Full scholarships are not awarded. The minimum amount offered is the amount of registration for the conference. Click here for a scholarship application. Application deadline: December 15, 2010.

Sharing Corral:
The Sharing Corral is an APHE tradition, a time for educators to showcase their innovative ideas. In 2011, there will be a Sharing Corral session on Thursday during an extended lunchtime. It will be a poster session that highlights successful programs and tools. Participating this year will be students from the university that will showcase some of their successful humane education, behavior and animal welfare projects. Conference attendees are encouraged to apply for a spot on Thursday. Click here for details and application information. Application deadline: January 30, 2011.

Thursday Dinner, Speaker and Auction to Benefit the Nathania Gartman Memorial Scholarship Fund:
What a night! Join us for a complimentary dinner, inspirational talk with Dr. Aubry Fine, and silent and live auction. Reserve your seat when registering for the conference.

A silent and live auction will raise money for the Nathania Gartman Memorial Scholarship Fund. Quality humane education materials as well as fun items in a range of prices will be included. Be sure to bring a big suitcase to carry home all of your loot!

Contributions from individuals, businesses and organizations are critical to the success of the benefit auction. The valuable and unique items contributed from all over the country are what make this auction so special. APHE encourages its members to solicit donations or donate your special purchases to help raise money for this vital cause. Click here for more information and a sample letter to solicit donations. Click here for a mailing label to send donations.

Would you like to volunteer to help with the auction? We sure could use your help! Are you the creative type? How about helping us organizing and assembling our gift baskets! We need volunteers with an eye for design and detail to transport and arrange the auction items to the banquet room for optimum display. Greeters are needed to assign auction numbers to bidders as they enter the room. We need great salespeople to assist in receiving the highest bid for items up for auction. If you are a wiz on the computer, we sure could use your expertise in logging our winning bids during the evening! Of course you will be able to spend all the money you wish and bid on all the wonderful items up for auction so don’t feel you can’t splurge and volunteer simultaneously. Please email Carol Everett at members@aphe.org to volunteer. Thanks so much!

Saturday Excursion (optional):

Come Learn The True Meaning of Fun in the Sun!
After attending the Best and The Brightest Under the Sun Conference, stick around and climb aboard the beautiful "Sun Princess" and sail away with us!

The Sun Princess Captain and Naturalist will entertain, guide, and teach us to "Do it as the natives do!" We will cruise to the outer islands which are only accessible by boat or plane. The excursion includes watching dolphins at play, shelling along pristine beaches and enjoying nature that only a few have the opportunity to experience. We will stop for lunch and dine at Barnacle Phil’s, a local favorite for Roberta’s world-famous black beans and yellow rice and other vegetarian and vegan offerings. Be sure to bring your swimsuits, beach shoes & shelling bag; we will provide beach chairs, umbrellas and water toys for your use. The boat holds only 49 passengers, so be sure to get your reservation in early for this once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-a-kind trip!

The Sun Princess departs at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and arrives at North Captiva Island around 11:00 a.m. Spend almost two hours shelling, swimming, snorkeling, or just catchin’ some rays. Then we travel to Barnacle Phil's for lunch. At 2:00 p.m. we depart for Port Sanibel Marina (watch for those pods of dolphins!) and arrive at the marina by 3:20 p.m. Tickets are $60 and include transportation to the marina. Lunch is on your own. Reserve your spot when registering for the conference.
